Where were you on the 6th of April 2024?
This date marked the first meeting of Mayo and New York since 2019, in the Connacht Senior Football Championship. And to celebrate the occasion, Portwest, a proud sponsor of Mayo GAA, put out a call for a Times Square takeover to gather before throw in.
And it wasn’t just a Times Square takeover. Waves of Mayo jerseys and flags filled the subways and streets ahead of the 6pm meet up.
The day was not just about sports; it was a demonstration of unwavering passion and unity. Incredibly, over 3,000 wonderful Mayo fans answered the call and before long, a chorus of “The green and red of Mayo” rang out around arguably one of the most popular landmarks in New York.
The sight was unprecedented: thousands of Mayo fans created an atmosphere so electric that it felt like a piece of MacHale Park had been transported to the very core of the Big Apple.
The call out marked a special date for Mayo GAA fans but this date also coincides with Portwest Workwear, celebrating 10 years of business in the United States. The backdrop of the Portwest billboard, prominently displayed, served as a proud symbol of Portwest’s global reach and our shared Irish heritage celebrated that day.
The result topped off an unforgettable day for Mayo fans, a 2-21 to 2-6 victory to line up a meeting with Roscommon in the semi-final on Sunday April 21st, with a 4pm throw in time.
Beyond the excitement of sports, 2024 is a milestone year for Portwest, marking 120 years of business. This longevity is a testament to Portwest’s commitment to quality, innovation, and community—a commitment mirrored in our support for Mayo GAA.
