Essential hiking gear from Portwest - The Outdoor Shop Ireland

Whether you're an experienced hiker or it’s your first hike, having the right gear is everything for your hike in the hills.

We’ve been making outdoor protective clothing for nearly 120 years. So, we’ve learned a thing or two along the way. Here are 5 hiking essentials you should wear or carry in your pack.

1: Comfortable Hiking Boots:

A good pair of hiking boots is essential for any hiking trip. They provide support, protection, and comfort for your feet on rugged terrain. Look for boots with sturdy soles, waterproof materials, and ankle support to keep you comfortable and safe on the trail. And bear in mind if your boots are new, you’re going to need to break them in before you hit the hills.

2: Reliable Navigation Tools:

Getting lost on the trail can be a dangerous and stressful experience. That's why reliable navigation tools are essential for any hiking trip. You’ll need a map and compass, or a GPS device. And like any tools, they can only help if you know how to use them. Download your maps offline before you head out because you’re unlikely to have phone coverage when you’re out.

3: Adequate Food & Water Supply:

Staying hydrated is critical for any physical activity, and hiking is no exception. Make sure to bring plenty of water on your hike and consider using a hydration system like a Salomon running vest to make it easier to drink while on the move. Plan to drink at least 2 litres of water per day while hiking. And let’s not forget food. As a general rule, aim to consume 100 cals for every hour you’re on the move.

4: Protective Clothing Layers:

Did you know it rains on average 150 days on the east coast of Ireland and 225 days a year on the west coast of Ireland?  If you’ve experience hiking in Ireland, you’ll know weather conditions can change quickly on the trail, so it's important to be prepared. Is there anything more depressing than soaking wet clothes after the sun shower? Portwest- The Outdoor Shop recommend you bring several layers of clothing.  You can’t go wrong with merino wool base layers.  Merino wool has fantastic moisture-wicking properties. And what does moisture-wicking properties mean we hear you ask. Moisture-wicking properties are fabrics that pull moisture away from your skin to keep you dry and comfortable, even in wet conditions. And you can add or remove layers as you need. You should include caps, suncream and sunglasses in this category because you’re just as likely to get sunburned as you are soaked in the one-day hiking in Ireland.

5.Emergency First Aid Kit:

There is never an ideal time for an accident to happen but out on the trail is certainly not ideal. Accidents can and do happen on the trail, so it's important to be prepared with an emergency first aid kit. What would we include in this kit? Tailor your kit for your needs but you can’t go wrong with items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and tweezers for removing splinters or ticks. It's also a good idea to bring a whistle or other signalling device in case you need to call for help.

So there you have it. By packing these 5 hiking essentials, you'll be well-equipped for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. As the saying goes “Fail to prepare and prepare to fail”. You don’t want your hike to turn into a mountain rescue mission. Check out our hiking range to keep your adventure going.
